At the Gulf Shores Museum is exhibited a large collection of Alabama memorabilia, including artifacts from Mound State Monument, which was also once known as Old Ship Island – home to Native Americans dating back 12,000 years ago. Archeological evidence indicates that there were four successive cultures living at this site: Woodland Indian (500 B.C.), Archaic Indian (1000-200 B.C.) , Mississippian Indian (A.D. 700-1600) , and Creek Indian (1661-1836).

When you visit the Gulf Shores Museum, make sure to see the various exhibits on display, including the historic homes of Gulf Shores, Civil War relics and military weapons, old furniture; local art; Native American pottery shards discovered at Mound State Monument; pre-Columbian artifacts found in Florida; antique fishing equipment collected over decades by Dr. Bossier LeMieux, an extensive collection of historical postcards dating back to 1876 showing pictures of early Alabama resorts that once catered to vacationers from the north.
